Desert Storm Hits Las Vegas!, a photo from Nevada, West

Photographer's Note

A strong storm with lightning and thunder hit the Las Vegas valley Monday afternoon. One part of the city got 0.83 inches (almost an inch) in 15 minutes!!! The valley gets an average of 4.5 inches of rain a year!There were major flash flooding and power outage in some area. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported.

Hello Eleu,
I thought scenes like this could only be created in Hollywood. It's rather shocking to realize this is real :-). It looks very dramatic and dangerous and it's a relief to hear that no major damage was done. It's a very well timed photo and you had enough time to get all the settings of the camera right.

Very impressive storm scenery, moving with force and pouring rain. Superbly taken from the point you were standing, Eleu, hope you had not wet yourself...
The clouds are low and well saturated.

What a dramatic photo, Eleu. There is a funnel like formation, heavy rain, a patch of blue and a sunburst effect in the same frame.

Howdy Eleu,

Eye-catching weather scene, overall dark grey tones, dramatic upsweep of pressure to the cloud ceiling. One can feel the storm coming and see the wind/cloud patterns.

PS: We did not climb Utah's Half Dome. I believe in total size it is smaller than Yosemite's.

amazing to see the power and the size of the cloud formation at the top of the frame.

Well that really is apocalyptic with dynamism, what a brilliant capture of the elements transforming this to an almost a monochromatic with lots of impact. Yes a great dynamic atmosphere and on more than one level, Eleu... the sunray is dynamic.. the sky is dynamic with heavy clouds and then the fg is strewn with lamp posts adding a surprise bit of interest there.

You caught that dramatic moment. I'm going to be the eternal optimist and assume that the storm has passed and is moving away. Sunshine and light is returning to the land after the storms battering, and all is well in the world!! Awesome take, Congrats

The dark clouds look so heavy!
An amazing sight, a case of being in the right place at the right time.
My eyes keep being drawn to the light in the sky on the l/h/s and the distant mountains.
