Photographer's Note

This generic alpine scene may look very familiar, as it appears in countless calenders, posters and tourist brochures (often from other countries!). I have seen it on a personal website on pictures from Turkey, and on a chinese brochure putting it somewhere in Sichuan. According to the Ira Spring, the author of my hiking book, he has seen it in travel brochures of Europe and South America. It is in Washington State, near the Canadian border. The mountain is Mt. Shuksan (elev 9127ft), the lake Artist Lake, the location Heather Meadows on the slopes of Mt. Baker, one of the main volcanoes of the Cascade range. It is neither a secret nor difficult to reach, the paved road to the Mt. Baker ski area (popular with people from Vancouver BC) is barely visible above the lake shore on the left. At the time there were about a dozen photographers with tripods waiting for the winds to calm to catch the mountain reflection on the lake, but it did not happen that day! The foreground was lightened and red added to emphasize early autumn colour. Surprisingly there are no photos from this area on TE I browsed all 26 pages of the Washington gallery. Perhaps somebody posted it under Brunei or something. I almost gave it the title "Niagara Falls".
