Photographer's Note
The North Manitou Shaol Lighthouse is situated in Lake Michigan about halfway between the mainland of Michigan and South and North Manitou Islands. It can be seen from a ferry heading over to the islands. Due to the high degree of fog the day we headed out, the lighthouse was barely visible until almost right up upon it. I liked this shot because it almost seems as if it is floating into nothingness.
A little history of the site: It has been in operation since 1935 and helps guide boats through the narrow Manitou Passage. Up until 1980 when it was automated, a three-man coast guard crew inhabited the lighthouse for two weeks at a time, with a one week trip back to the mainland. The lighthouse is now home to a family of double-crested cormorants which threaten the preservation of the site.
For more information on the history of this lighthouse, see this site: http://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/lighthouses.htm

Hi Amber, I like the minimalism of this image and its text-book composition. I also like how the greyish sky blends with the sea. the faint reflections of the lighthouse on the water is almost like oil painting. Nice stuff.

Hello,
Indeed it looks like you are taking a journey into an unknown and mystic place. The heavy fog in the air enhances that feeling. Placing the lighthose to one side of the image is very good decision. Also thanks for the informative note you wrote.
Best wishes,
natabec
