Photographer's Note
Falling Under Snow
Alluvial Fan Falls - Rocky Mountain National Park
This is my second photo from this long gentle water fall ...
Here is the first ... perhaps despite the appearance this one is below the first one .. right from the base of the fall as it turns into a rushing creek ..
I thought the effect of the river falling under the snow was pretty interesting ..
ripped from the first image:
In 1982 this area was the site of the Lawn Lake flood when an old dam up in the mountains burst. 3 people were killed and there was $31 million in damage.
- source estesnet.com
The vegetation is just starting to return .. the area is covered with large dead trees and 3 and 4 feet tall baby trees.

John,
I really like the long exposure and high f-stop, it creates a well satuated photo with great DOF. Your colors and lighting are great with excellent sharpness.

Hello, John--
An interesting take on the long-exposure waterfall. The 1/5 second was perfect, keeping some detail in the fall along with the strong blur effect. Perhaps this would have worked better as a vertical composition, fading from foreground snow to the waterfall to background rock.
Thanks!

hi john,
in the thumbnail all 'whites' appeared to be snow ... now i see they are not - great view of (a bit 'rusty')stone, water and snow - love the look of water at that exposure

Hi John,
Beautiful long exposure shot that effectively contrast the snow and water. The details to the multi-colored rocks is excellent. I especially like the scrub pine growing between the crease in the rocks.

Hi John,
Great soft water shot... The colors are just gorgeous! At first, when I looked at this picture I got confused by the tiny shrub on the left side of the fall... The shrub looks exactly like a tree, and because of this this small water fall looked HUGE to me! But, alas, after few seconds I figured out that you were just playing a trick on my eyes with this bonzai tree ;)

Hallo John!
I think I'll buy a subscription of "jmcl"-pictures ;-)
This one again is great! These colours and their pattern at the rocks in contrast to the white of snow and the "silken" water - stunning - and the contrast between the dry rocks and the wet one too! Thank you for showing!
Greetings from dull and coool Germany!

The textures of both the rocks and the running water are beautiful. The snow is the icing on the cake. The various colours of the rocks contrasting against the white of the snow make a good shot. Nice work John.
Best wishes

Hi John,
Nice work, the effect on the water due to this shutterspeed is just right, as mentioned before indeed still some details, but also sufficient movement to create some dynamics.
The sharpness on the static objects is terrific, also good saturation. So this (little?) tree in the back is about 3 - 4 feet tall? It's hard to see the size of things in this shot, the rocks can be very big, then the waterfall is too..If the waterfall is just a small flow, then the rest is ofcourse also not to big. I would love a few extra colours inside the scene, but realize they just weren't there.
Well done.

John,
I like the details & colors of your rock. It is interesting to see the soft water going the the sheet of snow which at first appeared to me as water sud or foam from the thumbnail. By the way can to tell me how do you link this picture to your other picture? Sorry, I'm not too good with the computer. Latiff

Hello John,
I know exactly where this spot is. It is a treasure trove for a lifetime of closeup, abstract type of scenic images. This spot is also an interesting microcosm of how nature is always changing. The vegetation, the lighting, the wildlife is never the same here from season to season. This is a beautiful and well-composed photograph of my favorite spot in RMNP. Your image is marvelous!
