Photographer's Note
With the popularity of yesterdays posting, I figured I'd post one last shot. The portrait format allows more detail of the icy seascape.
Approximately 4hrs into my flight from Vancouver to Tokyo, en route back to Singapore we are in the Bering Sea area.
I had the blind closed on my window for a couple hours when I happened to notice some guys sitting ahead of me taking photos out their windows. I opened my shutter to see this amazing sight. I jumped out of my seat and reached for my camera bag in the overhead compartment.
The Bering Sea covers over 2 million square km of the northernmost region of the Pacific Ocean. Its borders are defined to the north by Alaska, the Bering Strait, and northeastern Siberia, and to the south by the arc of the Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, and Commander Islands. The sea's largest embayments are the Gulf of Anadyr, Norton Sound, and Bristol Bay. The Anadyr River enters the sea from the west and the Yukon River from the east. The warm Japan Current has little influence on the Bering Sea, which has much ice; it can usually be traversed by ship only from June to October. The sea has many islands, notably Nunivak, St. Lawrence, Hall, St. Matthew, and the Pribilof Islands (all owned by the United States) and the Komandorski Islands (Russia).
Area: 884,900 sq. mi. or 2,291,900 sq. km
Average depth: 5,075 ft. or 1,547 m
Greatest known depth: 15,659 ft. or 4,773 m
Place of greatest known depth: Off Buldir Island
The Bering Sea is named after Danish explorer, Vitus Bering.
I hope you like the shot!

Wow, this is a very spectacular sight! I'm glad you noticed this sight and took the picture to show it to us. Very good scene. It reminds me of science fiction movies when they show the sun on an angle above the planet earth. Good colors and special fx.

Nice one Dan! I am not a big fan of images taken during the flight, but the strong colors and the reflections on the thin clouds render this one very artistic. You had great visibility during the flight. ISO 400 was by choice or by mistake?

I actually like this one better than the previous one, because of the added detail in the ice. I'll have to keep an eye out in future when I'm flying. Beautiful work!

Very beauiful, Dan. I think this vertical format is better, because in the foreground it is easier to make out what I am seeing, and that then leads the eye into the distance. Interesting striations in the clouds. The glare off the ice really looks great--must have been tough to get the right expoure, though! Good PP (I presume) to compensate for the usual washed-out look of photos through airplane windows. Well done! Regards, Ken.

Hi Dan,
This one is fantastic as well and I think the light is even more dramatic in this one. Great use of the vertical format which suits this photo very nicely! Excellent composition, colours and details! Well done, Dan!

Ann

nice. i like the sun. it's got the same glare as through the plane window and yet you managed to get rid of the "through the window" visual. nice.

Here you have to be fast to capture such a sight! The vertical format looks like a shot from NASA/satellite.
Well done Dan!
