Photographer's Note
Upper Copeland Falls
Copeland Falls/Calypso Cascade/Ouzel Falls Trail
Wild Basin Area
Rocky Mountain National Park
I have posted a number of images of the small but powerful Lower Copeland Falls .. here is the even smaller and more powerful Upper Falls ..
A wonderful intimate place in the dark woods of the Wild Basin area .. Only 0.3 miles from the trailhead .. unless you come at a busy time (weekend or summer afternoon) in which case all but the early birds can often tack a mile onto their walk up this trail as the lots all fill up.
I have replied to a couple people about the eerie feeling of this set .. It comes from a miscalculation on my part .. live and learn .. I thought this would be a fun morning shoot .. but the result of that is that East is to the left .. so I ended up in the dark woods with the sun shining on the face of each cascade .. in a way I think it amplifies the dark mood of these woods.

Hi John,
I like this frame, the rocks at foreground, well rendered, colored and texturized. I like the contrast between the rocky texture and the blur water, like a subtle veil. You manage very well this interesting effect, and the result is very beautiful. Thanks.
Regards,
Angel.

Hola John,
He visto que tienes una buena colección de cascadas, me encantan.
Esta tiene un excelente punto de vista lateral con ese difuminado del agua que crea un efecto muy especial.
Estupendo trabajo.

Hi John,
Gorgeous! You are already a master with these falls shots. I like those big rocks on the right and the appearance of the fall, that seems to be made with silk threads.
TFS, Regards, José.

Hi John, a change in aperture and speed from the last shot, not quite as smooth, but now silky with some individual lines seen. I'm guessing this leaves less disturbance on the water surface to see the bottom of that stream. The exposure is good, giving us great detail and colour throughout, even while maintaining this dark mood. Very nice.
Thanks, John

The richness of the colours of the rocks really contrasts well with the water here and I love the contrasts in textures too

Again a great work with long exposure and waterfalls.
I like a lot the dynamics of the fall, and the foreground sharpness is pleasant.

Bonjour John,
cette petite cascade se prête très bien à cet exercice de style, à ce filé majestueux.
Tout autour d'elle, les lumières sont bien capturées.
Une série qui nous plonge aux abords d'une rivière dans un milieu bien sauvage, comme je les aime.
Best regards and a good week-end.
Daniel.

Hi John,
Another great long exposure shot of this enchanting falls in the rugged wood. I like your POV cathcing the falls from the side so we can see how horseshoe rocks frame the cascading water.

Great choice of speed resulting in this so beautiful effect on the water fall. I like very much the dark stones all around, then this so water catching all the light. Very well done.

Hi John!
Great "serie" of these small waterfalls. Beautiful effect created by the long exposure, but it's not just that. The composition is great and so is the light managment. Congratulations!

Very well done John! Sometimes it can be difficult not to overdo the silky water effect and keep the highlights from blowing out, but you pulled it off well here. The foreground is sharp leading the eye nicely to the fall.

You did well in this compo of the little waterfall. The light seems for me just the best as here combined with the slow shutter and velvet effect of the running water. WEll disposed compo with the foreground stones included.

Hi John,
An excellent shot, the contrast between the silky and smooth fall and the rocks is so well captured, beautiful colours too. I wonder if the shot would have covered more if the POV was lowered.....just a thought. All the best
