String Lake, a photo from Wyoming, West

Photographer's Note

This is String Lake in Grand Teton National Park which is a glacier lake. This was taken on a hike to see Leigh Lake early in the morning. The colors of this lake were something of a chameleon because when there was no wind the water was blue but with a little wind the turquoise we associate with glacier lakes becomes evident.

The mountain on the right is Mount Moran which is 12605 ft (3842 meters) tall and on the left is Mount Rockchuck which is 11144 ft (3396 meters) tall.

Believe it or not I actually de-saturated the colors from the original.

I was having fun with symmetry here and it was taken around 9am.

beautiful shot, Stephen, and I'd say having fun with symmetry pays off - the result is fantastic. love the straight line of the shore as if drawn with the ruler and how even the tiniest things on this shore - what seems to be a building on the right and stone (?) on the left emphasise the mirror-perfect scene. amazing colours too, and I gladly believe you actually de-saturated, during the last year I've learned that American landscapes do not know the word "subtle" when colours are concerned :)

This is perfect reflection...I can see this shot even upside down..I have been to some of the high altitude lakes in the Himalayas and actually the reflection we get there along with the blue sky is just amazing..great composition and colours...great place to spend a holiday..!! very well presented..

Hello Stephen,

Spectacular colors and resolution, in this beautifully composed image. It is quite astonishing that this image represents a decreased color saturation rendition. Creating an x-axis with the shoreline is creative, bisecting the frame right in the middle.

Very vivid and clear photo, Steve - I vaguely remember this lake from my GRTE visit 4 years ago. A peaceful impression amplified by the calm and crisp reflection off the water. Interesting about the de-saturated colors, but I recall doing a similar thing on some of my older photos way back when :o). Hope all is well.

Now that DOES look wonderful, the symetry together with the perfect water stillness works best to deliver a visual impression full of the clarity you got in this picture, even desaturated colors are still rich and well contrasted, superb nature shot Steve, like it a lot !

Everything in it is just perfect.
I got to get my butt up in there at some point.
We were planning to visit it in 1996 but got snowed out on the Bighorns and on the Great Continental Divide by mid-september...

Hi Steve,
This is a very beautiful image. It's well composed and the colors are good. I personally think it needs more color burning. I have done a workshop; basically I did a complete linear burn on the image and then played a bit with blue to get it back to normal shade. Hope you like it,

This is a stunning work of symmetry, detail and color. I like the way the cloud reflections give a subtle interuption. Like Avene, I like that string of golden shoreline and can well believe the de-sat.

It could be almost too much completed. A magic moment, without any air breathing . A color of rust tree in counterpoint, like a renegade, a symmetry of mathematics and a technique without defect.
A smooth and beautiful image which I admire a lot.

You should have turn it upside down, as the reflexion is better in terms of contrast.
The mountain is well situated on the left, leaving room for it to go slowly down.
The kind of photo we all want to do.
