Photographer's Note
This photo may need some explanation.
I was camped by the Finke River to the west of Alice Springs, in Central Australia. The middle of winter in this area can be very cold, so I was assured of a clear sky.
The process is as follows:
Camera Nikon FM2, totally manual.
Lens Sigma 24mm.
Fuji print film.
Camera on a very sturdy tripod, a Benbo Trekker, weighted with rocks as wind can be a problem.
Lens aperture f8
Shutterlocked open.
I sat in the car with my foot on the brake pedal for several minutes.
Flashed the tree on the right and the shrubs to the left.
Went to bed, hoping no stray animal would visit in the night.
Woke up well before sunrise, closed the shutter.
The camera was covered in dew in the morning, but it is a tough old workhouse, and still works well today.
8 hour exposure.
Bingo.
Luckily for me I guessed where south was, and the result was this circular star trail.

Excellent picture - and great note to go with it.
It is possible to see the effect of the wind in the trees. I was wondering whether a more static subject (rocks/hills) would give a crisper silhouette, and whether this might perhaps make a stronger picture - just a thought.

well.....
this is experimentation at its best..
you forgot to mention one thing though.. what iso was the film??? :) 100??
i know you've been to india.. but i wonder if you've tried somthing like this in ladakh.. that is if you've been to ladakh...
especially in leh..
because at night you have millions of stars out in the sky.. there's more silver than black in the inght sky.. and the winds are quite calm too.. (compared to other areas.. where there are more stars.. but the winds strong enough to almost blow the tin roof off a shed)
i also see some more red in the bottom left corner.. was there someone else doign the same???
take care
p.s. ok i just woke up a little while back.. so my brain hasn't started functioning yet:) why did you mention the south????

Incredible picture, it looks like a magical gate to another dimenion! That effect would have been great already, but I admire your creative brains to think about adding some gadgets by using the flash on the vegetation and the breaklights of the car. Absolutely great, a favourite!

Hi Kevin, I came onto that one and like former visitors, I must say "Wow, what a result !". It reminds me of the movie "Stargate". Reading your explanations I undestand better now how it was taken, I believe leaving the shutter locked open is only possible on a limited number of cameras.

Kevin, Amazing work indeed.Magnificent POV the south pole!.. Im still gaping wide..
You have done a wonderful job working with the brake pedal and flashes on the trees.A simple star trail itself looks marvellous , but here along with the extra details this is a commendable achievement.
I dunno how long a battery operated shutter can hold in bulb exposure.. well it sure will drain the cells but I doubt this can be reproduced very easliy.. A circular trail..
WOW..
Still gaping.. Thanks for sharing - Vikram

very educative explanation and trial of yours for the TE members, especially for the new ones. I can also recommend the same technique for the "moon", like a half circle, but for a shorter exposure or with more closed diaphram.
