Uluru from the carpark, a photo from Northern Territory, West

Photographer's Note

The iconic Uluru in central Australia, formerly known as Ayers Rock. I've blurred the sky. Taken with an old film analogue camera. I liked the warm cold colour contrast between the big red rock & the clear blue desert sky. Behind me is the carpark and old camping ground, closed many years ago & relocated to Yulara, 40 km away.

'Uluru' comes from the local Anangu people, and means "Earth Mother". From Wikitravel "The rock is a so-called monolith, i.e. a single piece of rock or a giant boulder, extending about 5 km beneath the desert plain and measuring 3.6 by 2.4 km at the surface. It rises 348 metres above the plain (862.5 metres above sea level) and has a circumference of 9.4 km."

Hello Chris,
it is quite hard to trake a good photo of something so dominating the composition as this huge rock. But I have to say you managed very well. Splendid colors are the biggest strength of your image and the way the orangy rock contrasts with blue sky is amazing. I like placing small bush in the foregroung which lightens up the photo.

Hello Chris,

It always moves me to hear about the sacred places in Australia. The indigenous people certainly know how to live with this hot, dry climate.
You show how this sacred place rises so emphatically from the flat land. No wonder it seemed so special!
The colours are quite amazing.

The depth is superb and inviting and the way the frame is divided diagonally between earth and sky is lovely. Clarity under a very strong sunlight is excellent and the chromatic contrast is stunning. Hi Chris,

The distance between the carpark and the horizaon is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of this area of Uluru. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

C'est un incontournable lors d'une visite en Australie. Quel rocher spectaculaire comme une bosse rouge qui serait sortie de la terre. Les couleurs rouges sont superbes en contraste avec le bleu du ciel.

Good to see you back posting on TE and I hope you've been keeping well during your absence. These colours are so vivid and so typically Australian. There was no doubt in my mind where the photo was from, even in thumbnail. Excellent tight framing, sharpness and framing. Wouldn't want to be anywhere near Uluru at the moment in this heat (parts of NSW reached 49 centigrade on the weekend!) but it really is nice looking at the Rock from a distance.

Nice to see from you this icon of Australia. Fantastic colour of the rock against the blue sky. I was thinking about going to Australia and/or New Zealand and an island but unfortunately my friends can not go this year. I am disappointed :(. And to go there alone is not a good idea, I am afraid.
