Photographer's Note

Quenstown, New Zealand, seen from the top of a Bob's Hill. I found the city evocative of Aspen, Colorado in the United States and Lake Banff in Canada, both known as ski resorts, a largely touristic population that varies dramatically with the seasons, and a mostly young crowd searching for adrenaline rushes. Each evening in restaurants, we overheard young people speaking about the next day's plans to do bungie jumps, rock climbs, or Shotower Jet Boat rides through narrow canyons.

Lake Wakatipu seen in the photo is an S-shaped lake, its surface lying 1000 ft above sea level. Snow capped mountains, the"Remarkables," create a bowl around Queenstown and its lake. Visible in the right half of the photo are Cecil Peak (1,974 m) and a little farther Walter Peak (1,815 m), named after the two son's of the mid-19th century founder of Queenstown. According to urban legend, the founder intended to make the city "fit for a Queen," and alas the name stuck.

I used my iPhone-5 to capture this panoramic shot after taking a gondola ride to the top of Bob's Hill. The 12 MB photo appears just as successful as the composite of several photos shot with an expensive camera, and stitched using specialized software, as in the following example: Monongahela.
