Photographer's Note

Colquechaca (silver bridge in quechua) is a former mining town located in the Norte Potosi. Colquechaca is also known as the city of the Rosicler ( a silver bearing mineral). This is one of the most underprivileged regions of the country.
After having suffered the closing down of the national tin mining company (Comibol), Colquechaca lost about 75 % of its inhabitants... and most of its economic activity.
The picture shows a series of houses built for the families of the privileged Comibol workers.
Nowadays, small scale mining has survived but many miners, as elsewhere in the Altiplano, have had to migrate to the lower valleys, adapt themselves to tropical weather conditions and try to become peasants... a difficult if not impossible challenge!
Colquechaca is only a few hours of a 4x4 drive from Sucre or Potosi... needless to say its never visited by any tourist.
