I see this picture more like a documentary of their lifestyle and living conditions. The girl is a bit small and drowns in the surroundings. Still this could be a very nice portrait if you went closer and filled much of the frame with only her head. You could bring out earthly colors from the sand in the background and the the gate itself. And you would really bring out the girl. As it is I feel it should rather be in black and white...

I do find this sad picture very descriptive of a way of life. I wonder if the gate is enough to hold this child in, since there is no fence on both sides of the gate.
Based on smael's critique I made a WS to try to perk up a little this interesting pic.
