General Jos� Gervasio Artigas is a hero of Uruguayan independence. He is known as 'The Father of Uruguayan Nationality'. This equestrian statue in his honor is located in La Plaza de la Independencia in Montevideo. Artigas' remains are buried in a mausoleum beneath the statue.
