Photographer's Note
Here is a shot from my archives that I used to try to teach myself some things, I took this back in 2006, I believe inside Eaton Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Eaton Centre is a huge mall and part of a pathway you can walk in Toronto for a long way without every poking your head outside. We stayed near the train station (well, one night) at the Fairmont Royal York and explored this underground catacomb of shops and restaurants, walking for hours and never venturing outside at all. It was a rainy day, when I think back on this day I am reminded of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings' song "Under the Rain" (from their album Let's Frolic - click here to listen to it).
This trip was our first extended visit into Canada, I never really considered how folks might deal with long and arduous winters and where they might go when the lake effect snow and wind was blowing in. Now, after three visits into Canada and having many conversations with real Canadians (I'm only an honorary Canadian) on TE and TL, I realize the winter they get in Toronto is nothing compared to much of the country, although much worse than what I experience in my own mid-western US city.
I just caught myself straying off topic... I was here to explain this photograph and what I learned from it...
I shot this with my old and slow, but trusty Olympus 8080WZ (not many folks appreciate that camera, but it was a real introduction into a decent lens and what it could do). The Oly has been relegated to the pile of old and slow technology, but not yet thrown away or sold as it may still have a use now and again. These are not real Canada geese flying through that mall - it is a sculpture, and I think I remember it being called "In Flight". I was taken by the anachronistic silhouette against the skylight and the shopping mall background.
I always liked this shot, but I never knew what exactly to do with it, so I got it out and played with it last night for a while and created this monochromatic rendition. I added a blue filter to add a little chill to the air.
I like how it turned out. I think the conversion went well for once. What do you think? I'll add the color version to the workshop.
Thanks for looking!

Hello, very good conversion job.I like the perspective which supports the motion of the birds direction of flight.Your picture gives a good idea of the architecture also.Best regards Wolf.

Excellent pattern of shadowed birs, with the structure of the roof as background, it was an excellent combination. The absence of colors is also fantastic. Congratulations and regards from Brazil!

Good Evening Reed,
As ever I found out this shot of yours quite interesting. I have not seen too much of you posts in Black and white medium. This one is really impressive. First when I saw the thumbnail I though you have captured so many of them in a mall and OMG how can one allow all these birds to fly in a Mall. Thats when I saw the string attached to the very first one I realized. Nice DOF as the very end of the mall is distinct with details and not blurred.

Hi Reed,
nice the view of the interior of this Mall in Eaton Centre in Toronto with the 'flying' Canada geese in it.Informative your note about the underground catacomb of shops and restaurants,as the use of your old Olympus to capture the snapshot.I can say the colour format, looks better for my taste, but your skilful experimentation about the monochromatic rendition is well made creating a dramatic atmosphere in the scenery.

Hi Reed, man this is a great shot - and an early one from you too. The perspective is exceptionally good and I love the lines you've created with the architecture and the hanging birdies. Excellent monochrome colours, the image is so nice and sharp with great depth of field. TFS and have a wonderful week, Lisa

Hey Reed,
You cheated, Looking at the thumbnail, I was just in awe with how you captured all this geese in such a wonderful formation and indoor. I was expecting to get blown away by such rare capture, only for me to go "Oh, they're fake." Well for what it's worth, got me excited for a moment, that count for something :)
Anyway, just having fun with you. I do enjoy it very much even if they are not real geese. It is an excellent POV, "oh watch out for the dropping!" You pretty much put me right underdeath them. I like the blue duo tone experiment and it is interesting and captured well the liveliness in side a mall, many women's paradise on Earth. Thanks.

Hi Reed,
My first impression was an advertising of Davidoff Cool Water:) Because of this kind of blue of course.
I like it. It`s original.
I wld like to see this photo in black and white also, think it cld be a very interesting outcome.
Anyway, I find your photo a good graphic one.
cheers,
J.
