Photographer's Note

This is a close-up of the tomb of Maria de Villalobos, wife of the Lord of Ferreira de Aves. The tomb is located in the S de Lisboa (Santa Maria Maio, Lisbon's Cathedral).
The book she is reading is "The Book of Hours", a devotional book popular in the later Middle Ages. It generally contains a collection of texts, prayers and psalms, often with appropriate decorations, for Christian devotion. Books of hours were usually written in Latin (the Latin name for them is "horae"), although there are many entirely or partially written in vernacular European languages.

The Cathedral is knowns as "S", which is short for "S Espicopal" (Portuguese for Episcopal See). Built in the 12th century, this is where you can find the Baptismal Font used to baptise St. Anthony of Padua (also known as Anthony of Lisbon, as he was born in Lisbon on August 15, 1195).

The reason I took this pictutre has to do with my obsession for knowledge and books, and aslo with the fact that it always strikes me how crafty humans can be when they use their hands to build instead of destroy.
