Photographer's Note
I think of all the places we have visited in Namibia this has to be my favourite. Not the dramatic orange dunes, not the animals but the simple beauty of the wetlands. In a country known for arid and harsh landscapes, this area is a lush and green oasis.

Hello Rosemary
An almost perfectly symmetrical reflection! The reflection of the tree reminds me of the day job... Rorschach inkblot test and all that!
As always razor sharp and perfectly exposed and strong colours.
Nice capture

Bonsoir madame Snap,
This photo possess a definitive African flair, maybe from this feeling of wide open space or these beautiful stretched clouds that are aiming towards the corners of your composition.
Rosemary, please tell me if I'm wrong, but I think that you have darkened your sky with too much enthusiasm, because there is something that doesn't feel right.
Usually, the reflection on water is always darker than what is happening in the sky, and it's the opposite on your image. So if you look at your original RAW file and that the sky is darker than the reflection, than this will be my last critique on TrekEarth... :-p)) For example, the leaves on the main tree are almost silhouetted and details have turned very dark, while they are still visible on the reflection.
So whatever post processing you have done to your sky, you should have applied it to the reflection as well, so it would be more natural to get the same tonalities on both sides, only darker on the water.
But again, if I am wrong, I will have to apologize to you for the next century.
Warm regards,
André

Hi Roesemary,
i agree with you, this is a stunning landscape with a dramtic sky and reflections in the dark water. It is refreshing to see more of Namibia than only orange sand dunes. Don`t misunderstand me, i like the pictures from there but this shot shows us an other part of this country. Crisp and clear with good colors,Tfs!
Have a nice evening.

Hello Rosemary,
A region of Namibia and a landscape that for many on TE will be much less known. My first idea was that this picture was taken in Botswana.
I really like this image with the narrow strip of land and its reflection surrounded by beautiful clouds and parts of blue sky, with the real sky on top of course and a wonderful reflected sky on the foreground.
Congratulations!
Best regards, Paul

Hello Rosemary,
I can quite understand why this place appeals to you so much - the smooth calm water and the reflections upon it are stunning.
I read with considerable interest both André's critique and your reply thereto. And now I'm wondering if you are in the habit of using layer masks as a method of darkening and overly bright sky? That is something about which I read a few months ago and have to confess to having used it in editing a few of my more recent pictures. So far, it seems to me to give more pleasing results than other methods I have used hitherto.
I do see André's point but it's not entirely correct - the grass at the water's edge is definitely brighter than its reflection in the water though I agree that the sky does appear a little darker than its reflection. Nonetheless, a very pleasing photograph with all your hallmarks of technical excellence.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Rosemary - stunning shot, replete with interesting and educational discussion by yourself and Andre. That conversation aside, however, I love the setting light you've captured here, not only on the clouds but also illuminating the plant life at waters' edge beautifully.

I can see that Caprivi is your favourite spot. It looks wonderful there, these calm waters, peaceful atmosphere and green grasses. I can understand it when you live in desert land. For me it is less African, I would like to see here some animals. But the picture is marvelous and I will be happy to see Caprivi.
I have my Namibian visas!! They did it in express way,so all is OK. But I find it strange that visas are for very definite time, from 26th September till 9th Oct. Not even one day margin. I shiver thinking that I could put the wrong dates. And many other EU countries do not need them at all.
Wow, it is next month already, I can't wait...

The mirror effect is very dramatic. A sublime image - you have used the wonderful light to great effect. My eyes are drawn to that fresh green in the centre. It is wonderful that such wilderness still exists.

Hello dear Rosemary
This is a stunning photo. I've read André's very constructive critique and must admit I wouldn't have noticed a thing. His WS certainly shows what he means and definitely improves a photo that I thought could not be improved. Compositionally, it's a sensational shot. There's a wonderful balance to the photo and of course the symmetry of those reflections are out of this world. You couldn't pay for a more attractive sky. My favourite element, however, are the magically lit bullrushes in the midground. They're luminous and (for my eye at least) are the what draw the eye into the image and keep it there, the reflections and sky being the initial wow-factors. Anyway, a brilliant photo to learn from, both in terms of your photographic skills and light management, but also for the rich and informative critiques it's received.
Have a lovely day and having eavesdropped on your conversation with Giovanni, am delighted to hear you're doing a book on Namibian landscapes. It's sure to be a success, please let me know when and where I can get hold of a copy.
Best regards
Lisa

Hello Rosemary
I have been reading through the critiques and Andre's wonderful advice as well as looking at your workshop postings. This is almost an entire class in itself :)
Very beautiful and skilled capture here to provide the most wonderful raw material- the post processing cannot stand on its own without this amazing foundation but only serves to polish up the gem. Superbly seen and captured.

Hi Rosemary
cannot see Hammy or Ratty here, but intrigued by the way this image has started so much debate. It just proves how keen the eyes of TE's members are at seeing things that sometimes we miss. But hey! that is what I like about this site, it makes us think and hopefully become better photographers and digital darkroomers. I love the atmosphere in this shot and the light is amazing. Beautiful, no matter which version you prefer!!
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Rosemary
Love the charming feel of this surprisingly delightful little oasis amongst the harsh desert landscape as the day begins to fall and bathes the wetland in subtle warm light and color tones. This calmed down weather is so remarkable, the striking still mirror reflection in the fg sweeps the eyes along into mid fg and the band of light catches on the green reeds is wonderful and the drama in sky is simply mouth watering, one brief magical tranquil moment so well taken. We are always not presented with this kind of atmosphere, the beauty of mother nature I think you are lucky in a right place at a right time and you have all the elements here. A joy to behold, what else to say! Thanks for sharing this gorgeous shot.
My compliments :))
Warm regards

Hi Rosemary!
You have been showing a great album of Namibia!
Andre has surely made a great work but your photo was already very good! The sky was fabulous and you got a wonderful reflection on the water. The sun light on the first plants is just perfect! A great African atmosphere!

Hello Rosemary
No wonder that you enjoy this area. A fantastic landscape shot. I like the effect the clouds has on this fine composition, and the way we are drawn through the picture from left to right and towards the green meadow on the other side of the lake. A delightful view with very good colours. Beautiful work:) TFS. Have a nice evening.
