Skating in Rockefeller Center, a photo from New York, Northeast

The most famous ice skating rink in NYC is the one in Rockefeller Center. Yesterday there were a lot of people enjoying some time on the ice.

Rockefeller Center was built during one of the most difficult times - the Great Depression. The Metropolitan Opera was originally supposed to build their complex on the same site, but financial troubles stopped them. Between 1930 and 1939 fourteen Art Deco buildings were erected in Rockefeller Center, and another four were added in the 1960's and 70's.

With great architecture, artwork, an underground shopping and dining concourse, and, of course, the ice skating rink, this is one of the most iconic spots in midtown Manhattan.

Just to the right of this scene stands the giant Christmas tree, and the golden statue of Prometheus.

At the far end of the rink someone special is skating. Can you spot him? I'll put a close-up in the WS in case you can't. :-)

The WS disappoints me. I thought the "someone special" would be George Clooney or Brad Pitt or someone else at their level. But all right, Santa has nicer clothes. ;-)
"Iconic" is the word that entered my mind even before reading your note. I wonder how many movies that have featured this skating rink. Probably almost as many as the Grand Central Station. From this POV you even manage to give an impression of a modern Bruegel painting. There is no lack of human activities here.

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas Brenda!

Boy, if this isn't an instant association to the season, I don't know what is?!! :) Ice skating in Rockefeller basically screams Xmas...and it doesn't hurt that Santa is out there on blades as well. :)

Such an iconic winters scene from the Big Apple, I've seen this on t.v. more times than I can count...and one of these years I'm actually going to make it there during this period. Or, wait until it warms up in the summer and just enjoy it as a casual, lunchtime plaza. lol

Full of festive atmosphere and a great sense of action and fun...can't help but smile thinking of the holiday on ice. Have a wonderful day. Take it easy.

Yes, winter is truly here but the temperature in Las Vegas is expected to be around 70 degrees this week. Nice capture of those skaters with good lighting control especially the ice on the rink. Well done, tfs.

Interesting that after you critiqued my photo from the PPG place I get to see your photo from Rockefeller Center. I understand the inspiration behind the skating rink at PPG Place was the Rockefeller Center.
I haven't looked at the workshop photo yet, but is it Santa who is skating?

A pleasant daily life scene from your wonderful city. It must be a special experience to skate in this fine architectural surroundings. I like that some seem to be dressed for a walk in town, and not necessarily dressed in sportswear. Fine shot! Thanks.
