Photographer's Note
Edinburgh, my favourite city on the planet...not that i've seen all of them :-)
This image was taken from the top of the Royal Mile looking down a lane leading to Victoria Street. This is a lovely part of town, great for walking around.
Except for the tacky tourist shops. Full of tartan tammies, ginger wigs and tartan drummer dolls in plastic tubes stamped 'Made in China'.
Here is one of those shops which, to me, ruins a beautiful part of town.
Cobbled Streets, Victorian gaslamps, stunning architecture - and tourist tat. It is a disgrace.

I like the composition here; it works quite well for me. However, I can't say that I care for your conversion (assuming this was shot digitally). Things seem a little overexposed in general and lacking in contrast too. I wish the blacks were closer to black. Good use of the road as a leading line in the shot.

Your equipment is very basic you say but do you have a program like Photoshop, Picture-It or something like that to make things better ? This is a beautiful view in the street and with details as cobble-stones, lamppost and fences it's very nice but the B/W is not really interesting. When you have a program on your PC, try to change the B/W with more contrast. I could do it for you, but I don't change member's pictures. The picture however is a nice one:-))

Hello James,
I like this picture, good choice of B&W, it gives nice atmosphere of this place [more contrast and it could be excellent :) ]. Great, dynamic composition because of good POV.

Good composition, a nice view, with good B&W treatment. I would agree with the other comments that it could do with some more contrast - the workshops are useful for demonstrating this.
I visited Edinburgh a few years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there but I would agree with you about the tacky tourist shops. They exist everywhere though, whether it's 'hairy highlanders' or 'lucky leprechuans!'.

Hi James, This shows a classic street. Guess they need to do that to get a few dollars through the door? Advertising certainly takes away a lot of the charm. Good clarity. Well portrayed. Murray.

I suppose it does look out of place. The picture does a good job of sending the message you want, while making the area look attractive overall.

Serwus James !
Some very important and useful remarks were already written. I do agree about lack of contrast, especially. But as for the composition, this one is very well carried. I just love the use of the road in the images, and here this cobllestones are absolutely charming. The b/w choice is very proper for enhancing the mood of very old town. I can't see any distraction what is common in "street" photography.
Very convincing Work.
Thank You,
M.

Perhaps the light is a little flat and the sky a little washed out, but I am not sure that matters. The contrast between what is a timeless street and the shop is more important than the B&W contrast. The photo tells a story and I think it tells it well.

I believe this type of site (TE) would help get rid of some of these touristy stops if more people logged on and learned about other cultures real identities. So I agree, they annoy me some as well.
That said, I agree with most of the other comments here, exposure etc. Although, I think this is very well composed and I do like the choice of B&W.
Nice job,
Chris

If Edinburgh is your favorite city on earth, then I should go. At least, your picture makes me want to go.

Hello James,
you mustn't take things too seriously. Yes, everyone hates tourist tat but it seems everyone buys it too? I just go to Edinburgh to see the tourists and enjoy the vibe. Living in a small Scottish town that does not attract tourists I like the change. The only people we have in my town that are from abroad just now are the Polish people. And that is great, I get a kick out of hearing another language besides our own.If a few tourist tat shops would increase the numbers of visitors I would be all for it!
About your photo, it captures Edinburgh and its atmosphere well and is a good composition.Perhaps it does need a little more contrast.

Hello James,
I like your POV, looking down the street from a higher point. The architecture and cobblestones are great, and the B/W gives the photo an "old world" feeling. Even though the shop might distract from the nicer aspects of the street, the name is so tacky that it's actually amusing. :-)
