Photographer's Note

This is the second picture in my series on shopping this week. This one is taken in the parkade of one of the larger grocery stores in Vancouver.

This entire series was inspired by a photo in this month's AdBusters (if you have a chance to look at this mag I highly recommend it, even if you don't agree with the politics, it's clever and the pictures are amazing). In that pic you see a woman standing before the frozen foods section of a grocery staring blankly and talking on her cell phone. Incredible pic.

This series is an attempt to examine our everyday consumer world as it relates to shopping (specifically it will focus on grocery shopping). In the West the purchasing of food is a detached, prepackaged affair. Our food comes nicely wrapped up in colourful packaging. Our food comes from the store. Period. This separation has resulted in alot of misconceptions and prejudices about food. Just look at the reaction many TE members have at pics of animals being slaughtered. And those of you who have travelled can I'm sure recall your (or another tourists) revulsion over food practices in "developing" nations.

Worse still is our lack of appreciation for this "convenience." The consensequences are all around us.

These pics are reflections on our way of life.
