The Valley of My Childhood [8]

I was thirteen when I left Gauldalen behind, after living there since I was born In this series it is my aim to show the diversity and daily life in this area, during all seasons of the year.

Many great athletes live in Gauldalen and the region has more than its fair share of Olympic Champions, off the top of my mind I make it to be five of them. For instance former ski jumper Espen Bredesen, who lives in the village Kv嶚 that we can see near the left edge of the image.

Espen Bredesen is World Champion from 1993, Olympic Champion from 1994 and he won the Four Hills Tournament in 1993/1994. I dont think there is more left to win in ski jumping

Today Espen Bredesen is best known as a sports reporter in Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). A few more facts about Espen Bredesen can be found here:

Gauldalen is well over 100 km long. The river Gaula runs in the valley in the northwest direction from its origin in the mountains around 30-40 km from the Swedish border.

A moving glacier at the end of the last ice age shaped the valley 10-20.000 years ago. At that time the ocean level was approx 200 meters higher as compared with today, and one can easily find several geological formations created in the last period of the ice age.
