A collection of photos from the ruined towns of Pompeii & Herculaneum and the artifacts recovered from them. Pompeii & Herculaneum were Roman towns destroyed by a volcanic eruption on Aug. 24, 79 AD. The ancient towns lay concealed under meters of ash and were lost for almost 1500 years before they were accidentally rediscovered. The archaeological areas are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Pompeii receives more than 2.5 million visitors a year & is the most popular tourist destination in Italy.
